SEARCH HELP

1. Whenever possible, enter the former municipality name as it will yield more accurate results. Since there is a history of municipalities across the province amalgamating or changing names, prior or original names are important. For example: A search for unregistered easements in the current Town of Clarington might have to be conducted under any or all of; Town of Newcastle, Town of Bowmanville, Township of Darlington, etc.

2. When entering the municipal name, do not include words like "Township" or "Village". Use only the municipal name (e.g. to get results on a search for the Township of Brock, only enter a search for Brock).

3. Please do not enter Regional Municipalities (they will not yield any results).

4. The term "Municipality" refers to any community description (e.g. City, Town, Township, Village, Hamlet, Police Village, etc.).

5. Municipality names can be entered either in upper case, lower case, or a combination of the two.

6. Do not use a direction descriptor in the municipal name (e.g. to get results on a search for West Gwillimbury, only enter a search for Gwillimbury).

7. Ensure Municipality names are spelled correctly! Even the smallest error will give inaccurate results if any results are found at all.

8. Once data has been entered and you have moved to the next page, the data you entered becomes locked in and you cannot return to previous pages and alter the data.

9. Searches are made looking for the municipality name you supply anywhere in the database's municipality field. If the number of hits matching your request exceeds 20, you will be asked to narrow the search criteria to make the search more efficient. The larger the number of hits on a search the slower the system will work, until it becomes virtually unusable. For example: A search using the municipality "York" would yield matches with; City of York, York City of, Borough of East York, East York Borough of, City of North York, North York City of, Township of Yorkville, Yorkville Township of; Village of Yorkdale, Hamlet of Yorkham, etc. To effectively narrow down the search on "York" or "Wood", put a space before and after the municipal name to remove the compound word entries (e.g. Yorkville, Woodville, etc.).

10. Searching by registered plan number only will rarely yield results, use former lot and concession whenever possible.

11. Be sure to include the hyphen in registered plan numbers (e.g. 65R-12345)

12. If you only have a plan number, you can disregard what is in the descriptor pick list box.

13. Proper spelling and punctuation are critical. A misspelled municipal name will yield no results, even if there are unregistered rights listed. The same applies to punctuation. For example: There will be no results for a search on OConnor, but many records found under O'Connor.
